ABSTRACT

In Chapter 4, I outlined the physical transformation of the Rual settlement resulting from various development projects – construction of houses, schools, the community hall, medical clinic, sporting facilities, and prayer houses. All these built spaces seem to follow a plan to re-shape the settlement to one resembling a Malay kampung. Such a design clearly adheres to the government’s primary objective for the Orang Asli which is to integrate them into ‘mainstream society’, and that, as noted earlier, means turning them into Malays. Simply altering the way the settlement looks represents only part of the overall programme of change.
