ABSTRACT
This chapter covers writing the background chapters for a thesis or dissertation. This includes writing the literature review and chapters which describe the theoretical framework to a study. Particular writing skills covered include summarizing and critiquing previous research, adopting a stance and using reporting and evaluative verbs. Attention is given to the issue of plagiarism and suggestions are made for how students can avoid it.
