ABSTRACT

The various kinds of paths which make up the pedestrian network in Melbourne’s Central Activities District (CAD) offer users varieties of amenity, choice and freedom: opportunities to indulge in unplanned or risky behavior, to linger and to wander. Two major pedestrian paths through Melbourne, Swanston Walk and Southbank Promenade, weave together complex sequences of perceptions and potentials for interactions with other people, and thus provide rich opportunities for play.
