ABSTRACT

Thus far in the book we have considered definitions, purpose, context, the helping process, helping activities and the role of the professional helper. Before moving on to look at helping skills, strategies and the three-stage Single Interaction Model later in the book, this chapter will discuss the wider aspects of a collaborative helping approach. We will consider the theoretical foundations of the young person-centred approach and identify the possible limitations of approaches derived from humanistic counselling. The chapter will also refer to the need to evaluate practice through identifying the positive outcomes of helping interventions, and will end with a discussion of aspects that contribute to effective helping.
