Islam as perceived by the Russian travelers

For the Russians, the determining element of the “Otherness” of the Iranians was the religious one: Iran and its peoples were seen first and foremost as non-Christian, with their “backwardness” and “barbarism” being the signs and natural consequence of their being Muslim.
