ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the strategic interests of China in relation to North Korea in general and the North Korean nuclear issue in particular. It examines China’s perceptions of North Korea in the 21st century. For China, North Korea is still needed as a friendly buffer state as well as a political ally. China’s economic goals in relation to North Korea will also be explored; this relates in particular to how North Korea might disrupt the stable environment that China desires.
