ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the main characteristics of each learning difficulty with practical ideas for use in subject areas, and contacts for further information. Some of the tips are based on good secondary practice while others encourage teachers to try new or less familiar approaches. Pupils with other less common special educational needs may be included in some secondary schools, and additional information on these conditions may be found in a variety of sources. These include the school Special Educational Needs Coordinator, educational psychologists and the Internet. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a term used to describe children who exhibit over-active behavior and impulsivity and who have difficulty in paying attention. Down's Syndrome is the most common identifiable cause of learning disability. This is a genetic condition caused by the presence of an extra chromosome 21. Tourette's Syndrome is a neurological disorder characterized by tics. Tics are involuntary rapid or sudden movements or sounds that are frequently repeated.
