ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the principles that lie behind the design of spaces for early childhood in Reggio. The preschool and infant-toddler centre buildings in Reggio incorporate large open spaces, small spaces, thresholds and outdoor environments, all of which serve well-thought-out, clearly identified purposes. The concepts of time and space are closely interrelated, with the physical environment regarded as a partner in the learning process. The preschool and infant-toddler centre buildings in Reggio incorporate large open spaces, small spaces, thresholds and outdoor environments, all of which serve well-thought-out, clearly identified purposes. Materials and finishes are carefully selected for their aesthetic, sensorial and functional qualities in order to create an environment that is culturally appropriate for babies and young children. Children are able to vary the light levels in different areas and are encouraged to be aware of the tactile, acoustic and olfactory properties of the environments they inhabit.
