ABSTRACT
This chapter describes the five activities that young people and their teachers need to engage in if they are to foster an emotionally literate environment:
developing a language to put into words the feelings they are having;
finding a space to discover their own feelings, and how these are shaped by the situations in which they find themselves;
asking questions of other people about what they are feeling, so that they can compare different experiences to their own;
engaging in dialogue with each other about their thoughts and feelings;
shaping out of everything they have learned about themselves a personal narrative that enables them to experience their life as meaningful and valuable.
