ABSTRACT

Whether you are an experienced Intensive Interaction practitioner, a coordinator or senior manager it is always helpful to reflect on starting points and firm foundations. Ironically, it is sometimes our very enthusiasm that gets in the way of good practice. Keenly motivated by training workshops, some literature you have read or the progress of pupils working with colleagues, it is natural to be impatient to start. But if you take the time to lay firm foundations you will reap the benefits of more effective outcomes. We do not intend this chapter to be a ‘how to do guide’ – see Nind and Hewett (1994; 2001) for guidance on getting started. This chapter takes a broader view, focusing on matters of organisation, policy writing and coordination that need to be firmly in place for Intensive Interaction to operate at optimum levels in schools.
