ABSTRACT
Even if you simply want to stand still in your career, you have to develop! There is no such thing as treading water. Keeping your job ticking over so that you are as effective as you can be as a TA requires your commitment to noticing what’s new out there and what could usefully inform your work in the classroom. Think of the bees…when a new source of pollen is found, most of the bees in a hive fly to it while, say, 20 per cent of the bees check out where even newer sources of pollen can be found. And that should be your attitude to your job: 80 per cent of your focus could be on doing what gets results in the classroom, while 20 per cent could be focusing on development and expansion.
