Informant 161, the Hui retiree mentioned in Chapter 2, was eighteen years old in 1958. In that year, she unwillingly joined hands with her fiancé to serve the contractual obligation laid down by their parents. She had not been consulted in the hasty negotiation that decided her marriage. Nor was she pleased about her parents’ choice.
