ABSTRACT

Two concepts that are inextricably intertwined with lifelong learning are the information society and the knowledge society and it is important for our understanding of lifelong learning and the learning society to understand both of them. Whilst I am separating them here, they are confused in some of the literature which is unsurprising since they almost always refer to precisely the same societies. Nevertheless, UNESCO is clear that they are not the same:

Today, as we are witnessing the advent of the global information society where technology has increased the amount of information available and the speed of its transmission beyond all expectations, there is still along way to go before we achieve genuine knowledge societies.
