ABSTRACT

As the previous pages have demonstrated there have been significant changes in the education of adults, stemming either directly or indirectly from the processes of globalisation. These changes have, obviously, affected both students and teachers. We have already shown that there has been a significant increase in the amount of education offered to adults throughout the world and later in this chapter we will offer a more thorough analysis of this in respect of the UK. But before that it is necessary to examine the occupation of teachers of adults and it will be asked whether there is a single occupation, let alone single profession, of adult educator. The chapter, therefore, is divided into two sections: the first examining the occupational structures of teaching adults and the second looking at student participation and the barriers to that participation.
