ABSTRACT

This chapter considers ‘technique’ as the skills or activities that the therapist carries out

within a psychoanalytic session. These are profoundly influenced by the therapist’s

understanding of psychoanalytic theory and her1 manner of putting it into practice. These

theoretical ideas have to be put into practice. Additionally, what the practitioner believes

to be the purpose of psychoanalytic psychotherapy will influence her ideas about how it

ought to be conducted.
