ABSTRACT

It is perhaps rather clichéd to adapt Donald Winnicott’s statement that ‘There is no such

thing as an infant’, but it is an important idea to keep in mind when working with

children. They do not exist in isolation, separate and independent. They come with

parents, carers, significant adult figures and siblings. We should add that there is no such

thing as a toddler, a child, or an adolescent, as their parents are always present in our

work, even if we are working alone with the child.
