Pain management

Pain is undesirable, a physical and psychological phenomenon that can cause physiological as well as psychological complications. Physiological problems caused by pain include

■ stress responses (see Chapter 1) ■ reluctance to breathe deeply (if self-ventilating), contributing to atelectasis

and respiratory failure ■ immunosuppression (Cheever, 1999).
