ABSTRACT
Professional expectations (expected norms) are clarified in NMC publications, especially the Code of Conduct (NMC, 2004). But making individual decisions about individual aspects of patient care raises options and dilemmas, which are not always resolved by codes. Ethics is about values. Applying ethics to practice helps decision-making, it does not replace it.
