ABSTRACT
Sophisticated technology and treatments can now cure many diseases that were, until fairly recently, fatal. But emergence of new or mutated microorganisms has challenged medical and ethical boundaries while attracting extensive, and often disproportionate, media attention. This chapter discusses two micro-organisms that have caused epidemics of severe communityacquired pneumonia in recent years: severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Legionnaire’s disease.
