ABSTRACT
Although neurology services are usually focussed in regional centres, patients with acute neurological injuries and complications are admitted to general ICUs. Traumatic brain or spinal injury can cause life-threatening respiratory and cardiovascular failure, necessitating urgent ICU admission. Some patients may later be transferred to regional centres, while others remain due to poor prognosis, their injury being relatively minor, or from lack of beds.
