ABSTRACT
Staff who have gained necessary bedside nursing experience and any required educational developments/qualifications may plan managerial experience as part of their professional development, or find one day they are the most senior person on duty (possibly due to sickness of senior staff) and so expected to manage the unit for that shift. This chapter provides a trouble-shooting introduction for staff not normally in charge of their units (hence the direct address to readers).
