Introduction

This book examines the processes by which the European Union (EU) has become a northern European power. In doing so, this book portrays the EU as the most important power in northern Europe towards which most other international and regional agents need to, and will, look. That such a very strong claim can now be advanced was not really foreseen in many analyses that were published at the turn of the millennium regarding future patterns of order in northern Europe.
