ABSTRACT
A basic understanding of the structure of language, including the anatomy of words, is a worthwhile investment in time and effort. Dissecting words and getting down to the bare bones, as with identifying the root words can help to heighten consciousness of basic spelling elements. It is important to match spelling instruction to individual learning styles, to stages of development and to curricular needs. Graphic organisers and computer packages enhance and clarify understanding, as well as enabling pupils to improve their spelling skills. Use multi-sensory learning methods and match spelling strategies to individual learning styles. The National Literacy Strategy (NLS) defines it as a 'morpheme which is added to the end of a word'. The National Literacy Strategy advocated using the 'self-discovery' approach and recommended asking the pupil to generate and write a rule to match a worksheet when they have completed it.
