ABSTRACT

The computer has been acclaimed as one of the greatest inventions of the many technological marvels of the twentieth century. It ranks beside television as one of the most influential communication instruments ever devised, and has made global mass communication a reality. Keyboards come in different shapes and sizes. The size of the keyboard is important when choosing laptops and pocket-size handheld spell-checkers and personal digital assistants (PDAs) which are miniature handheld computers. This is because those with poor visual discrimination or poor fine motor skills such as those with dyspraxia find small keyboards more challenging. Auditory learners can be helped by hearing the spellings, if using a multimedia package while people type. Speech recognition (SR) software is seen by many dyslexic users as the ultimate solution to the problems of those with reading, writing or spelling problems as well as those with poor fine motor skills.
