ABSTRACT

They are to learn to read, write and spell homophones, which are words that sound the same but have a different meaning and a different spelling – such as to/two/too. Homophones can be a challenge to learn as well as a persisting cause of confusion for many spellers. They cause difficulties such as their/there/they’re for those with poor visual memory. The speller has to remember the meaning of the word and then remember which spelling is which. Dyslexic spellers with sequencing problems often face a further difficulty when trying to remember the order of the letters – such as whether to use ‘thier’ or ‘their’?
