ABSTRACT

To help learn and understand the principles and processes involved in using syllables. Long words are often seen as difficult and challenging and can be hard to read and spell. People with phonological difficulties may tend to omit ‘parts’ of words – ‘rember’ for ‘remember’. Awareness can be developed by counting or tapping out syllables, and by saying the individual syllables aloud and synthesising these to make whole words (initially in spoken words, later in writing). This can ultimately be done as a spelling activity.
