ABSTRACT

There are two kinds of vowels: short vowels say their sounds; long vowels say their names. Digraphs are two letters making one sound and include consonant digraphs and vowel digraphs. Diphthongs are two vowels side by side, which glide together when pronounced in rapid succession. Blends are letters found next to each other; they sound separately but quickly to make the sound. Assimilations are nasal sounds (made down one’s nose) and involve the letters ‘m’ and ‘n’.
