ABSTRACT

They are to learn and understand the principles and processes involved when reading, writing and spelling plurals. To teach and learn plurals, it is important to be aware that individual spellers learn in different ways. Recall and retention of spellings can be established by using different strategies and a variety of tactics, depending on preferred learning style. Multi-sensory teaching of spelling has been found to be the most effective means of teaching spelling for all learners – including those with special educational needs – because all the senses are used simultaneously, thus utilising all the pathways to the brain as well as activating different areas. Target words have been provided with illustrations ‘to establish a store of familiar words that are recognised immediately on sight and linked to their meanings’ which the Rose Review points out as helpful for readers and spellers.
