ABSTRACT

The anthropology of neoclassical economic theory does not only assume that human beings are rational (Chapter 3) and self-interested (Chapter 4), but also takes it for granted that the choice behavior of persons is always subject to scarcity. Indeed, in the definition of economics proposed by Robbins, economics is defined as the science which studies human behavior as a relationship between ends and scarce means which have alternative uses. The assumption of scarcity is formulated in Robbins’s third axiom that the means are insufficient to realize all ends.
