ABSTRACT

This is a study of the capital structure and strategies of growth of a large Chinese corporation, Hong Leong, in Malaysia between 1970 and 2002. The core line of enquiry is how it tapped into capital markets in Asia in order to secure a phenomenal growth extending from Malaysia and Singapore to Hong Kong, China, Australia, the US and Europe. For the sake of clarity and rigour, I will concentrate principally on the Malaysian stock market, from where Hong Leong’s core companies were listed and achieved a pincerlike expansion outwards.
