ABSTRACT

As with the terms ‘early’ and ‘middle’, ‘late’ adulthood is largely a matter of opinion! When one is 17, being 30 seems not only tremendously far off but impossible to imagine and also very old. Age 40 is really, really old and age 50 is ancient. But from other age perspectives the labels differ. To a 50-year-old being 20 or even 30 seems rather young! So we have first to try and define what we mean, psychologically, by late adulthood; in much psychological writing this seems to be the 60s and the decades following to most researchers in this field.
