ABSTRACT

The years 1929 to 1931 saw the end of Morton’s career in ‘pure’ Intelligence, in the sense that they were the last years in which he worked entirely within the Intelligence establishment. After 1931 the professional pursuit of Bolsheviks and their paymasters was superseded by an equally professional pursuit of evidence of the industrial and military preparations for a future war by Britain’s potential enemies, principally Soviet Russia and Germany. The story of Morton’s increasing preoccupation with economic and industrial intelligence, beginning with the formation in 1927-8 of Section VI of SIS (the Economic Section), falls to the next Chapter. It seems logical, however, first to carry the story of his Bolshevik-hunting activities through to their formal conclusion.
