Together with the other Japanese islands in the Pacific, the islands of Ryukyu (Okinawa) were disposed in Article 3 of the San Francisco Peace Treaty. Territorial disposition in this Article 3 has important implications for contemporary regional international relations in terms of the following two problems: (1) the status of Okinawa; and (2) the territorial dispute between Japan and China(s), called “Senkaku” in Japanese and “Diaoyu” in Chinese.
