ABSTRACT

The issue of having an excessive breast milk supply appears to have been overlooked since research into breastfeeding began. It is complex and confusing as babies fight at the breast in the same way babies do when there is insufficient milk to satisfy their needs. Studies such as those by Schmied and Barclay (1999) and Schmied and Lupton (2001) indicate that some of the women had experiences similar to those in the current study but there was no identification of the problem as being one of an excessive milk supply and the overwhelming focus was on the negativity of the experiences of the participating Australian woman. In contrast, the majority of women in our research, while acknowledging difficulties and problems, talked positively about managing their excessive breast milk supply.
