ABSTRACT
The bishop of Alexandria’s custom of issuing a letter each year before the beginning of Lent announcing the date of Easter seems to have originated in the mid-third century with Dionysius the Great.1 Of the fifteen letters that Theophilus must have written prior to the Origenist controversy, only fragments of the first, third, fifth, sixth and probably tenth survive.
