ABSTRACT
The mask is a tool of theatre. It should be respected but not revered. There is no magic latent in itself, but when used properly can generate enormous power that directly influences the audience’s imagination. And like a power tool, it requires just the right amount of power to make it work. Too much or too little and the tool will not function properly. Too much power may manifest itself in exaggerated gestures, excess fidgeting and an inability to stop moving! Too little power will fail to animate the body sufficiently to communicate effectively. Either way, if the tool is not powered up correctly, it will fail to live in the audience’s imagination, and they will quickly tire of its superficiality.
