ABSTRACT
I met Don Black the other day – East End boy turned global lyricist, the man who, more than 35 years, wrote the words of those songs you croon to yourself in the bath – ‘Born Free’, ‘Diamonds are Forever’, ‘Love Changes Everything’. It led me to look over the words of ‘To Sir with Love’, as rendered somewhat brassily by Lulu and rather more soulfully by Vonda Shepherd on the Ally McBeal soundtrack.
