ABSTRACT

A firm grip on the concept of the illustrator probably helps in an understanding of the writer, although the latter is definitely a more complex cognitive task. Young children can draw and paint, but they do not know how to write. Their pretend-writing scribbles cannot be read back like the print in books. Children in book-oriented families will have their oral stories written down and read back to them, but this cannot be done alone, and probably at first is not seen as closely related to the creative process of the author.
