ABSTRACT

The subject of PE has been at the centre of many changes during the last few years in relation to its recognition, prominence and delivery within the NC. In the primary sector, the introduction of the numeracy and literacy hours in the late 1990s brought about a significant squeeze on the time available for other subject areas. In addition, the implementation of the Key Stage Three strategy and its focus on English, Maths and Science from September 2002, brought with it similar issues and pressures for PE within the secondary sector.
