ABSTRACT
The Minoan sources of Europe are practically ignored in the vast literature on the origins of modern Western culture. The basic reason is that excavations in Crete only started when the grounds of interpretation were already laid down. The most significant and highly symbolic miss is that the discovery of ancient Crete coincided with the year in which Nietzsche died – 1900, or the turn of the fateful twentieth century.
