ABSTRACT
In popular imagination, the Renaissance is associated with three names: Italy, Tuscany and Florence. Of these, Florence has the greatest evocative power, just as the golden age of classical Greece is inseparable from Athens. Florence as a city symbolises the Renaissance, and was not only its most important centre, but its animating spirit as well.
