ABSTRACT
Given the importance of Cimabue and Leonardo, already identified by Vasari as representing the two most important breakpoints in Renaissance painting, the overcoming of the maniera greca and the start of the maniera moderna, the parallels between them are particularly important. While neither represented a ‘zero point’ in history, both were sources of the two most important streams of the Renaissance. Recent scholarship, with due corrections, only confirmed Vasari’s assignment of such a foundational or initiatory role.89
