ABSTRACT

In the past, leadership was primarily concerned with individual accomplishment and reputation. Leaders were special people who did special things or were placed in special positions. The rest were followers who, for reasons ranging from fear to convenience, went along with what the leader said and did. Leadership in this way had a historical, ‘great man’ essence to it. Yet this is not the true essence of leadership. The essence of leadership is the transformation it brings – and that transformation is not just in the thing itself but in the minds of those who participate and express leadership.
