Introduction

The right to fight and lead wars has until very recently been considered an exclusively male domain. In most societies, the dominant tendency has been that, with the exception of war heroines and mythological figures, women have taken part in combat only in exceptional circumstances. Although they have sporadically participated in military conflicts as combatants, usually at the end of the war they have been expected to give up military roles and return to their traditional domestic sphere.
