Portuguese fort (feitoria) is constructed at Arguin, south of Cape Branco. The pioneering ‘factory’ which was at the core of their seaborne empire.

Portuguese are confirmed in their African possessions by the Papal Bull Romanus Pontifex of Nicholas V.

Tangier is taken by Portugal.

Treaty of Alçacovas confirms Portuguese monopoly of the Guinea trade.

Construction of the fort at Elmina (São Jorge da Mina) on the Guinea coast.

Vasco da Gama paves the way for Portuguese influence in India.

Ceylon witnesses the first Portuguese landing.

Ormuz (Hormuz) at the mouth of the Persian Gulf is captured by the fleet of Afonso de Albuquerque. It is a major strategic victory.

Albuquerque succeeds Almeida as Viceroy. Maritime dominance of the Portuguese is confirmed by the naval victory at Diu against a combined Egyptian and Gujerati fleet.

Albuquerque captures Goa from the Sultan of Bijapur (Nov.). This marks the beginning of Goa's rise as the location of Portuguese power in India.

1511

Malacca is captured by Albuquerque. A trading post is established.

1518

Construction of a fort in Ceylon.

1531

Daman (on the coast of India) is seized.

1532

First permanent Portuguese settlement in Brazil is established.

1535

Diu (on the coast of India) is ceded to Portugal.

1557

Trading post on Macao is established.

1559

Daman (in India) is formally ceded by Gujerati Sultan Bahadur Shah.

Trading post at Nagasaki (Japan) is established.

Colony is established in Angola.

Portugal (and its empire) comes under Spanish rule.

Muscat is lost to the Arabs, but Luanda and Benguela are recaptured from the Dutch.

1652

Expulsion of the Dutch from north-east Brazil.

1661

Cession of Tangier as part of the dowry of Catherine of Braganza's marriage to Charles II of England (June). Portugal cedes Ceylon to Holland but retains Brazil (Aug.).

1663

All Portuguese possessions in India (except Goa and Diu) are captured by the Dutch.

1665

Military presence in Cabinda is established.

1668

Ceuta is ceded by Portugal to Spain.
