Imagine arriving unexpectedly at a large intersection, with a whole series of different turnings that you could take. Some of the options would lead you straight into oncoming traffic although you might not instantly be able to tell which ones these are, others would be safe to take but lead you in the wrong direction, while one or two would actually get you to your destination. A clear sense of where you are headed, and a readiness to look at the road signs, would certainly help you in choosing the right route.
