ABSTRACT
There are, as Olivia Manning’s Harriet observed, all too often some reasons for prejudices or, more charitably, misunderstandings. It is particularly unfortunate that the military do so much to foster and to sustain the prejudices they endure. Clearly the misunderstandings which underlie those prejudices must be appreciated if they are to be avoided.
