ABSTRACT
Conditions in East Asia are changing rapidly as labor costs in many parts of the region are rising and as increasingly sophisticated technologies must be applied. That raises the question of whether the East Asian growth process can be expected to continue, smoothly and simply, in the new world of IT and e-business. Do the technological and business aspects of the new economy pose special requirements that must first be overcome? What is the “digital divide” and can it be crossed?
