ABSTRACT

Mary, British Olympic gymnast and ex-Ballet Rambert dancer, rollerskated fast around X6, exploring speed and balance (Latest Release 1979). Thinking in the gaps between fixed time and space, Mary remained motionless rather than repeat old patterns of movement. X6 provided Mary with the context to explore alternative ways of moving: contact improvisation, release technique, Alexander technique and t’ai chi. I remember her walking on stilts under the archways of London Bridge, and balancing upside down on the handles of a trolley in a disused car park down in the docks (By River & Wharf 1976). Quietly perceptive, always seeing two sides of the argument, Mary spoke to an internal dialogue, attending to kinaesthetic knowledge. She walked as easily on her hands as she did on her feet.
