ABSTRACT
Background The Classical Greece of the fourth and fifth centuries BC was dominated by the city-states of Athens and Sparta. The Classical era ended with the rise to supremacy of Macedon under Philip II and Alexander the Great. Its importance to the heritage of the Western world is so great as to make it the logical starting point of the case studies in this book.
